Don’t Swallow the Seed
Masaha Residency Cycle 11 Misk Art Institute2026Don’t Swallow the Seed is a research-led installation that examines inherited narratives surrounding food, seasonality, and family memory in Riyadh. It draws from personal and intergenerational stories in which everyday encounters with produce become carriers of folklore, humor, and emotional meaning.
The project investigates how cultural narratives around food shape perception, belief, and imagination. The work asks how inherited narratives form, repeat, and transform through intimate domestic exchanges. Through docufiction, personal narration, and observational documentation, the artist gathers fragmented stories tied to food and seasonality. She works with spoken memory, filmed gestures, and domestic anecdotes to construct a layered archive of recurring narratives. Repetition and storytelling become key methods for reactivating and recontextualizing inherited family knowledge.
The work invites viewers to consider how everyday objects carry inherited memory, and how food can act as a vessel through which the personal and the collective quietly persist across generations.
